Why Teeth?
Most razors today have a solid safety bar under the blade. It presses your stubble flat and pushes the lather away just before the blade arrives. An open comb has teeth instead. Lather and stubble pass between them, so the blade meets each hair standing up, in lather. In our testing, open combs consistently delivered closer shaves than safety bars.
Open combs got a reputation for being aggressive. But press too hard with any razor, safety bar included, and you'll get irritation. Aggression comes from geometry and pressure, not teeth. Let the razor's weight do the work.
Why the NEW?
Not every open comb is equal. Gillette's first, the 1904 Old Type, had two flaws: three small pegs that let the blade sit off-center, so no two shaves were quite the same, and short, straight teeth that dragged across the skin. Over the next twenty-six years Gillette fixed both. The 1930 Gillette NEW replaced the pegs with a built-in alignment bar that centered the blade every shave, and lengthened the teeth and turned them down for a smoother glide. With its cutting geometry, the five measurements that decide how a razor cuts, the NEW was the peak of vintage razor design.
The Core Problem
Why Open Comb Was Abandoned
Then it was gone. Not for performance. For cost. Open-comb razors are more intricate, and more expensive to make. Gillette's next razor, the 1938 Tech, sold for about half the NEW's price. Its guard was stamped from sheet metal, and the open comb was gone. That trade, performance for margin, set the pattern the mass market still follows. The DE5 exists to break it.
Where the NEW Left Off
The DE5 picks up exactly where the NEW left off. It keeps the NEW's cutting geometry (blade angle, gap, exposure, extension and clamping distance), its alignment bar and its longer, turned-down teeth, and improves everything around the cut.
The Evolved Open Comb
The signature "Evolved" open comb starts from the NEW's elongated, turned-down teeth. Then every tooth grows a bulb, and a solid pin runs through them, joining the teeth into one comb. That opens room for a clog-proof lather channel under the cap, so the comb stays clear and rinses easily. And with the teeth joined, they stay straight: no more bent teeth.

Shaving Doesn't Need to Be Reinvented
The safety razor was invented in 1904, with the disposable blade, and perfected by 1930. Rather than the experience improving after that, we got a case study in the shortcomings of the pure-profit motive.
We scoured the entire global history of safety razor design, testing dozens of iterations. The finding: the older the piece, the more we liked it, right back to the Gillette NEW of 1930.
It started with the Gillette Old Type of 1904, a genuine luxury product at $5, three weeks of the average salary.
